Although life is busier than ever, it is interesting to note that more Christians and non-Christians are choosing to keep a Sabbath rest to counter the stress of our society.
While it’s good to take a day and rest, keeping the Sabbath holy is not only relevant today, it’s the right thing to do. Yet, the fourth command stirs up much controversy over its relevance. But in studying this command, it becomes clear that the Sabbath was a gift to man, not a burden.
Human beings need the Sabbath; it’s actually a blessing if one truly keeps it. The Life Application Bible comments on the Sabbath command in Exodus 20:8-11, saying: “The Sabbath was a day set aside for rest and worship. God commanded a Sabbath because human beings need to spend unhurried time in worship and rest each week. A God who is concerned enough to provide a day each week for us to rest is indeed wonderful. To observe a regular time of rest and worship in our fast-paced world demonstrates how important God is to us, and it gives us the extra benefit of refreshing our spirits. Don’t neglect God’s provision.”
